Dictionary Project

For more than 14 years, a community partnership focused on promoting and strengthening literacy provides Bartholomew County schoolchildren—and adults who are learning English—with dictionaries for use at school and at home.

The Dictionary Project provides dictionaries to third-grade students at public and private K-12 schools in Bartholomew County as well as home-schooled third grade students. Educators describe third grade as the time when a student transitions from learning to read to reading to learn, thus making the distribution timing critical for young learners.

English/Spanish dictionaries are distributed to adults at the McDowell Adult Education Center who are trying to improve their literacy skills.

Local Dictionary Project partners include the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus along with the Heritage Fund–The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County, and Bartholomew Retired Teachers Association (BARTA).

The Dictionary Project is a national organization with a goal to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary.
