Writing and Public Speaking Assistance schedules are available in the ARC. You do not need to sign in if you are just picking up a schedule.

Writing Assistance

Help is available for students who need writing assistance—from writing, proofreading, and properly citing and formatting reference material for a research paper to writing application letters for scholarships.

Tutors in the Academic Resource Center (ARC) can help you plan, organize, and revise your working outlines, papers, reports, presentations, resume, and any other written materials in order to better address the assignment, your audience, and ensure appropriate context.

During a one-on-one consultation with a writing tutor, you will identify key areas in your writing that can be improved. Please note the ARC does not offer a "drop-off" service—you should come to your session ready and prepared to work.

Our goal is to create better writers—not just better writing. We will counsel you about your writing challenges and offer solutions and assistance in correcting them. We won't proofread every word in your paper, but will help you become a better proofreader yourself so you can catch your own errors.

General Information

  • If you need assistance, consult a writing tutor while your idea, research project, or presentation is in the early stages.Tutors can often help you understand the nuances of an assignment, clarify your ideas, and refine your approach.
  • Once you have your first draft completed, you may want to return for another consultation and feedback on possible improvements.
  • Tutors strive to stay current with the latest MLA, APA, and other reference and formatting styles required for papers. For more information about styles and formatting, visit the IUPUI Writing Center, where you can download a variety of documents with helpful information and suggestions.
