SOC-R 497: Urban Sociology

London and Paris: March 14-22, 2014

This three-credit course (Individual Readings in Urban Sociology) will give you the opportunity to explore and understand the dynamics of urbanization, urban social structure, urban ecology, and theories of urban development in two major European cities.

You will travel to England and France to study the dynamics of urban sociology, practicing utilizing your sociological imagination and making observations related to a predetermined research question at each stop on the tour.

Pre- and post-travel classes will be required. Registered students will check Oncourse frequently in order to stay fully informed about course details. In addition, students will be responsible for a multimedia poster presentation after the trip.

Estimated Costs

The estimated cost of the trip is $3,260.50* plus the standard tuition and fees associated with registering for SOC-R497. The trip includes:

  • Airfare
  • Ground transportation
  • Accommodations
  • Daily continental breakfast and four (4) dinners
  • Tours
  • Health insurance

You should plan to bring $200-$400 for meals not included in the program fee and personal expenses like shopping, souvenirs, or incidentals.

*Costs may vary depending on the exchange rate, when airfare is booked, and individual expenditures.

Financial Aid

  • Most financial aid may be applied to university-sponsored programs.
  • IUPUI or IU scholarships, grants, and loans applicable to program costs can be used toward expenses for this study-abroad trip.
  • Performance-based scholarships, guaranteed tuition certificates, fee courtesies, Indiana Higher Education Awards, and awards to children of disabled veterans are not applicable toward costs for the trip.
