Be Official!

Never simply stop attending a class without completing the withdrawal process. If you do this, you will receive a grade of F for that class. The result will be a negative impact on your grade point average.

If you want to withdraw from a class, always do so officially.

  

Withdrawing (W) From a Class

If you are thinking about withdrawing from a class, always consult the academic calendar for specific deadlines and tuition refund dates.
  • If you drop a class between the time you register and the end of the first week of the semester, no signatures are required. Visit dropping and adding classes for more information.
  • Beginning the first day of the second week of classes, you must obtain the signature of your academic advisor to drop a class. The instructor's signature is not required. You may obtain a drop/add form from the Office of Registrar Services.
  • Starting during the eighth week of the semester (or the third week in a summer session), you must obtain both the signature of your instructor and your academic advisor to drop a class. At the time of your withdrawal, your instructor will assign a grade of “W” (withdrawal) if your work is of passing quality or a grade of F (failing) if your work is not of passing quality.
  • The last day to drop a class with the signature of your instructor is the end of the 12th week of the semester (or the fourth week in a summer session). Be sure to consult with your advisor to determine if any additional restrictions exist in your division or degree program.
  • After the 12th  week (the fourth week in a summer session), you must obtain signatures from the instructor, the head of the division offering your major, and your advisor to drop a class. A W grade in this case will only be considered given an extraordinary situation which is beyond your control and is rarely granted.
