Dean of Students

The dean of students maintains the IUPUC community standards by helping students, faculty, and staff report any all situations of misconduct.

Specifically, she oversees the process for Admissions Clearances, manages the adjudication of all student conduct cases, and chairs the IUPUC Behavioral Consultation Team.

Student Grievances

IUPUC’s dean of students can serve as a neutral, impartial staff member who can assist with the resolution of problems and disputes. One of her more important responsibilities is providing confidential and informal assistance to students, faculty, and staff.

If you have a concern about needing to interact with a fellow student, the behavior of a member a faculty or staff member, or want to dispute a campus policy, contact Dr. Sandra Miles, smiles3@iupuc.edu director of the Office of Student Affairs, at 812.375.7525

In the role of ombudsman, the dean of students protects against abuse, bias, and other improper treatment or unfairness. Serving as a neutral third party, the ombudsman is not an advocate for any individual or for the university, but serves as a source of information, referral, and assistance in resolving concerns and critical situations.

In considering any given situation, the ombudsman takes the rights of all parties into account. Her role is to supplement, not replace, official university resources for conflict resolution. In general, the ombudsman will:

  • Provide confidential consultation to members of the campus community who are aggrieved or concerned about an issue
  • Clarify issues and generate suggestions, alternatives, and options for resolution
  • Facilitate assessment of the pros and cons for possible solutions
  • Conduct informal fact-finding to better understand an issue from all perspectives
  • Interpret university policies and procedures
  • Obtain the agreement and permission of all parties proceeding, if direct action is needed and appropriate
  • Consult with all parties to clarify and analyze problems, focus discussions, and develop a mutually satisfactory process for resolution
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times, remaining independent, neutral and impartial and using good judgment in providing assistance
  • Facilitate group meetings and use negotiation skills to facilitate communication among parties in conflict
  • Encourage flexible, equitable administrative practices that meet the needs of all members of the campus community
  • Provide referrals to other resources whenever possible and appropriate
